On March 3, 20 Republican and Democratic senators met to call on UK lawmakers to reconsider the government's decision to allow China's Huawei to become one of the equipment suppliers for the country's 5G mobile network.
In an extraordinary letter to members of the House of Representatives, the senators said: “In the face of security, privacy, and significant economic threats brought by Huawei, we are looking forward to would like the UK to reconsider its recent decision, take steps to minimize the risks brought by Huawei and work closely with the US in these efforts. ”
The US wants Britain to reconsider using Huawei equipment in 5G networks
The letter was signed by a fifth of the 100 members of the Senate, including Chuck Schumer - Democratic leader, Richard Burr - Republican Intelligence Committee Chairman and Mark Warner - Vice Chairman of the Democratic Party. Earlier, in January, a bipartisan group of 42 members of the US House of Representatives sent a similar letter.
These bipartisan moves stemmed from the British Prime Minister Boris Johnson's government agreeing to allow Huawei to play a limited role in deploying and supplying equipment for the UK's 5G mobile network. Last January, this put pressure on the close, traditional relationship between the United States and Britain.
Meanwhile, the two countries are preparing to negotiate a trade deal that Britain hopes will be one of the biggest rewards since leaving the European Union.
Washington has sought to persuade allies to ban Chinese companies from participating in its 5G network, warning that Huawei equipment could be used by China to spy on the Chinese government. Huawei has repeatedly denied espionage allegations made by the United States.
